City Infrastructure Projects Receive Statewide Recognition
May 12, 2025
Four vital local infrastructure projects by the City of Tallahassee received top honors from the American Public Works Association (APWA) Florida Chapter at its annual Florida Public Works EXPO. Earning these awards reflects the City's commitment to investing in public infrastructure and providing best-in-class services to citizens.
APWA Florida Chapter Project of the Year – Capital Circle and Blair Stone Road Force Main Rehabilitation (Water/Wastewater $5-25 million category)
About the Capital Circle and Blair Stone Road Force Main Rehabilitation project
The Capital Circle and Blair Stone Road Forcemain Rehabilitation project extended the service life of approximately 3,500 feet of 42-inch wastewater force main at the intersection of Capital Circle Southeast and Blair Stone Road. As this pipe handles a large percentage of the City's sanitary sewer flow, this project helped improve overall system reliability and resiliency.
APWA Florida Chapter Project of the Year – Zillah Road PASS (Roads and Highways $2-5 million category)
About the Zillah Road PASS project
The Zillah Street Pedestrian and Street Safety – or PASS – project brought multimodal enhancements to the corridor. The open ditch running alongside the roadway was enclosed to create improvements for pedestrian connectivity. A sidewalk and multi-use trail were built, and pedestrian crossings were improved. The roadway itself was also resurfaced, creating a smoother drive. The project incorporated ample resident feedback to ensure it met the needs of the community. The result is a beautiful, functional and safer route for all.
APWA Florida Chapter Project of the Year – McCord Pond Drainage Ditch Improvements (Stormwater $5-25 million category)
About the McCord Pond Drainage Ditch Improvements project
The McCord Pond Drainage Ditch project decreased erosion and improved maintenance access, safety and stormwater conveyance capacity, starting at Betton Road and ending 300 feet north of Post Road (behind Ashford Club Apartments). Erosion along this segment of the ditch had caused steep side slopes and deep drop-offs, and the wooden retaining wall located north of Post Road had reached the end of its useful life, restricting proper access for maintenance. Informed by engineering design alternatives and public input, the project replaced the open drainage ditch with a large underground box culvert (similar to Franklin Boulevard).
APWA Florida Chapter Project of the Year – Myrick-Skyland Ditch Enclosure (Stormwater $2-5 million category)
About the Myrick-Skyland Ditch Enclosure project
The Myrick-Skyland Ditch Enclosure project improved open ditches between Myrick Road and Rhonda Drive and between Skyland Drive and Devra Drive north of Myrick Road, creating a stabilized flow path for stormwater runoff, improved water quality and improved maintenance access.
The APWA Florida is a statewide chapter of the American Public Works Association, an international educational and professional association of public agencies, private sector companies and individuals dedicated to providing high quality public works goods and services. APWA Florida Chapter represents a membership of more than 1,500 individuals from all areas of Florida and Puerto Rico.
